Goods Worth N400m Destroyed As Fire Guts 30 Shops In Nnewi Market

Fire outbreak at the electronics market in Nnewi, Anambra State

On Friday, February 7th, 2020, not less than thirty (30) shops and goods worth N400 million were destroyed at the electronics market in Nnewi, Anambra State.

According to The Nation, the fire which broke out in the wee hours of the day, when people noticed heavy smoke at the market.

One of the victims, Mr Kenneth Ofodum said he was alerted to the fire disaster and he had to rush to fire service station located at motorcycles spare parts section of Nkwo Nnewi market for assistance.

Ofodum, a line chairman in the market, however regretted that many stalls were razed before the arrival of the fire fighters.

He said:

What is most confusing about the whole thing is when we saw fire coming out from one of the office blocks in the market with no electricity connection.

He revealed that over twenty shops were vandalized by opportunists, including those not burnt by the fire outbreak.

However, Ofodum said that two suspects were later apprehended and handed over to the police.

He appealed to Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, to come to the aid of the affected traders.

Another victim, Jude Nwokolo lamented that his entire goods were destroyed by the fire.

He lamented:

I just opened my own shop last year after I was settled by his master only to lose all my goods as a result of the fire disaster.
