Nigerian Final Year Medical Student In Ukraine Commits Suicide After University Expelled Her

Badmus Ololade Rafiat

A protest has been planned by Nigerian students studying at Ternopil State Medical University in Ukraine, after a final-year Nigerian medical student committed suicide because she felt frustrated by the tertiary institution.

A final year medical student, Badmus Ololade Rafiat, concluded that there was no viable option left for her than to take her life, after the school expelled her for not passing the mock exam ahead of the final MBBS exams.

Flavision learnt that she made unsuccessful attempts to transfer to another medical school to take the MBBS, just like other students do. But allegedly, the school repeatedly frustrated her and refused to provide the necessary transcript needed for the transfer.

The only option given to her was to return to Nigeria and reapply for a student visa to start all over again from year one.

After her pleas for consideration yielded no result and her dean compounded matters by refusing to reconsider her case, she wrote a suicide note and ended her life on Thursday, January 16th.

Upon her demise, the school mourned her and placed a notice on a school wall with her photo. They expressed their sympathy and condolences to her family and friends. The school added that she took her own life because she was depressed and suicidal.

But friends of Ololade, better known as Pemisire, disagree. They said that she wasn’t depressed or suicidal, as the school want the public to believe. They blamed her death on the frustration of having to start all over again after spending six (6) years at the medical school.

Her friends blame the school authorities and they have planned to protest the alleged unfair treatment that caused her untimely death.
