A teenage boy in the UK who woke from a coma after smelling his favourite deodorant has now grown curly hair for the first time.

Kacper Krauze, 14, spent 25 minutes underwater after going into shock while playing in the freezing River Eden in February.

He was in a coma for three weeks before the smell of Lynx brought him around.

Now, a few months on, the youngster has gone curly – despite having straight hair for all his life.

Wioletta Krause, 43, told the MailOnline:

What’s unusual is his hair is curly now. Before the accident it was always straight and now it’s very curly which is strange, but it’s still nice.

He’s still taking his tablets but the doctors have said he will be able to come off all of this medication in the future.

She feared for her son when his body was pulled from the water five months ago.

Paramedics managed to restart his heart in an air ambulance on the way to hospital, but Kacper remained in a coma with medics trying everything to revive him.

But, when intensive care, nurses at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital told his parents to bring some personal items to hospital.

Emotional Wioletta was amazed when he woke up after she sprayed the Lynx on her son’s body.

She said:

It was a miracle. We had tried everything to wake him up.

A nurse had suggested I bring some of his toiletries to wash him with.

As soon as I sprayed the Lynx he opened his eyes immediately. He must have remembered that was his favourite smell.

After the Lynx miracle, Wioletta says she is always going to wear the deodorant, calling it her “lucky charm”.

She added:

He’s back at school part-time and will do three or four hours a day because he gets really tired sometimes and once he’s tired he won’t want to work.

His speech is so much better. He still has speech and language therapy but he can say everything. It’s going to take a long time but Kacper’s slowly getting back to normal.
